The MegaVibe model of tuning forks are custom crafted tuning forks with frequencies ranging up to 256 Hz. All MegaVibe tuning forks are 3 inches in width and 1 inch in thickness. The length varies depending upon the frequency chosen.
For example : 2 forks are shown here, 256 Hz at the bottom, and 52 Hz on the top. The 256 Hz fork is a little over 1 foot in length. The 52 Hz fork is nearly 2 feet in length.
Why are they so large?
In order to have a fork vibrate at low frequencies, the length of the tines needs to increase. The longer the fork, the lower the frequency of vibration it produces. The sound of the tuning fork is created as the tines vibrate, thus creating pressure waves in the air. These pressure waves then travel into our ears and the brain interprets them as 'sound'. In order for the sound of a fork to be louder, the design of the fork needs to create stronger pressure waves. This is accomplished by having a wider tine on the fork, thus moving more air and creating more sound. Also the increased size of the fork increases its mass, which then creates a much longer period of vibration. The 52 Hz fork vibrates more than 3 minutes after being struck.
